Meet Kathleen

Dr. Kathleen Smith helps busy humans build better relationships.

Kathleen Smith, PhD, LPC is an author, licensed therapist, and expert on relationship systems. She helps individuals and organizations learn to think differently about their relationship challenges and begin to operate more thoughtfully and less anxiously.

Kathleen teaches leaders around the globe how to “think systems,” from the Office of the Secretary of the Defense to the United Methodist Church. She serves as an associate faculty member of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, teaching clinicians, clergy, and business leaders in the center’s training programs. Kathleen earned her undergraduate degree at Harvard University and completed her graduate degrees at The George Washington University.

Kathleen is the author of Everything Isn’t Terrible: Conquer Your Insecurities, Interrupt Your Anxiety, and Finally Calm Down, a funny, practical guide that breaks down psychotherapy concepts into accessible stories of change. Her upcoming book, True to You: A Therapist’s Guide to Stop Pleasing Others and Starting Being Yourself, launches in July 2024.

Kathleen has written essays for popular publications such as Slate, Salon, New York Magazine, Psychology Today, and many others. She’s been interviewed in The New York Times, The Washington Post, GQ, Women’s Health, and many other publications.

Her favorite part of the work week is writing her weekly therapy newsletter, The Anxious Overachiever, which has over 11,000 subscribers on Substack. People are hungry for practical, theory-based thinking in today’s anxious world, and Kathleen enjoys connecting weekly with readers.

Kathleen lives in Washington, DC, with her husband and daughter. When she’s not helping clients think about their relationships, she’s texting with her fangirl friends about the relationships on her favorite TV shows.
